5 hot ways to make a house a home.

This is why I do what I do. If you’ve read my posts before, you will know “home” is something I hold very close to my heart. There is something about home that has such a profound effect on us, beyond any creature comfort. You could be traveling across the globe, seeing the most amazing sceneries or tasting the best food, having once in a lifetime experiences, but nothing compares to the feeling of kicking off your shoes and falling onto your own bed when you get home. The sense of familiarity and security that envelops you as you enter your own space is unparalleled, providing a rare sense of peace and tranquility that simply cannot be replicated elsewhere.

But what can we do to make our house a home? Aesthetically…….

Layers.

This can sound very vague to those outside of the design space. Let me elaborate.

  1. Add a rug to the hard flooring - doesn’t have to be expensive, STRÖG from ikea is great. Make sure it is larger than the furniture it is sitting on.

2. A couple of unmated cushions on the couch in varying sizes

3. On the topic of lounges, don’t buy the suite. Or at least change up the colours.

4. Heights - Keeping everything at eye level or below makes the space feel unfinished. Don’t be afraid to have scale variations. Tall leaning mirrors or low hanging pendants (when appropriate). Even wall paper or painted ceilings have the full space feeling considered and cozy. Hang those drapes to the ceiling if suitable, not just above the architraves. Lets give height.

Art.

It doesn’t have to be expensive. A Matisse is great, but also an old small painting from the antique store with a new frame can tell an interesting story.

Feel free to put your art in less predictable spaces. Laundry (good ventilation), WC, Pantry.

Soft Furnishings.

Fabrics, warm and cozy. Think blankets, cushions, wallpapers.

Fabrics give you not only the opportunity to add layers but also to have some fun. Be playful and express your personality through window furnishings, furniture upholstery, rugs, wall finishes etcetc. You get my point
